Pond Supplies

All the pond supplies you need to build and maintain your garden pond are available online. You will find a complete A to Z of equipment, fish food and water additives.

After you have bought a liner, you will need a pump and
filter for your pond. Submersible pumps are best suited to small to medium sized ponds with roughly 200 - 800 gallons of water. These are often the best choice because they connect easily to most of the submersible filters that are available for small to medium sized ponds.

For medium to larger sized ponds with 1000 gallons of water or more an external pump is best suited. This is often the best choice because they are typically more energy efficient and can handle larger water flows. They are also designed to work well with most biological filters.

Good filtration is essential for a clear and healthy pond, especially if fish are added. Nature relies on springs and streams to supply fresh water. Marsh grasses and other aquatic plants filter impurities. A garden pond needs a biological filter to perform these functions. Depending on the size of your pond you can choose between a submersible filter, often combined with the pump, or an external filter that can be located at a convenient point beside the pond.

To assist with the filtration process and to keep the water clear of algae an ultraviolet or UV sterilizer is required. This is often combined with a biological filter or can be supplied as a separate unit.

During the winter months when temperatures fall and the surface of your pond freezes over, you will need a pond heater or de-icer to keep a small area ice free so that the gases produced by decaying plant material and fish wastes can escape to the atmosphere.

Underwater and floating lights are used to highlight and enhance the features of your water garden or fountains at night. This allows you to extend the enjoyment of your pond after dark.

Food for your fish, be they goldfish or koi, comes either as pellets or sticks both designed to float on the surface of the water. Of the many brands available most claim to be a complete food with amino acid additives.

Should you experience problems with your fish, there are several test kits to enable you to check the quality of the water in your pond. Take your pick from kits to test for ammonia, nitrite or pH to combination kits covering four or five tests in one pack. If your fish are suffering as a result of poor water quality there are various products you can buy to treat the problem.

Our favorite place where you can find any pond supplies you need, along with a good word of advice so that your fish or koi pond will be clean of algae and your fish will live a long healthy and happy life is MacArthur Water Gardens. Pay them a visit.
